LAVA International  Unlisted Share TIMELINE:
2009: Lava International was founded as an Indian mobile-phone company, initially focusing on feature phones.

2011–12: Lava became one of the leading Indian mobile-phone brands, benefiting from the rapid growth of feature phones and affordable smartphones. It expanded into Android smartphones and launched XOLO.

2015: Lava began mobile-phone manufacturing in India and strengthened its in-house R&D and product-design capabilities.

2016–17: The entry and aggressive expansion of Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo significantly changed India’s smartphone market. Their large marketing budgets, aggressive pricing and strong offline distribution put heavy pressure on Indian brands such as Lava, Micromax and Karbonn, leading to a sharp decline in Lava’s smartphone market share.

2020: Lava was approved under the Government of India’s first PLI scheme for domestic mobile-phone manufacturing. However, it did not achieve the required target in FY22.

2021: Lava launched the Agni 5G, beginning a renewed push toward the smartphone and higher-value segments.

2023–25: Lava rebuilt its smartphone portfolio with Agni, Blaze, Yuva, Storm and Bold, while expanding its R&D, manufacturing and retail network.

2025: Smartphone portfolio grew 63% YoY, online sales volume increased 74%, and retail sales grew 12%, with the retail network crossing 1 lakh outlets. Lava also maintained around 25% share of India’s feature-phone market.

2026: Lava announced a ₹1,100 Cr investment over five years to expand into display modules, camera modules, PCBs and enclosures, increasing localisation and vertical integration.

2026 – PLI 2.0 opportunity: The proposed new PLI framework includes a potential Tier-2 category for Indian companies with their own product design/IP and domestic manufacturing. Lava could potentially benefit because of its Indian ownership, in-house design/R&D and manufacturing capabilities, although any specific selection remains subject to official government notification.

The Indian smartphone market remains highly competitive and dominated by Chinese brands, with Vivo emerging as the largest player at 17.4% share in FY25, followed by Samsung at 13.3%, Oppo at 12.4% and Realme at 11.2%. Vivo, together with iQOO, maintained a strong position in the Indian smartphone market.

In FY25, Vivo sold around 26 Mn units, followed by Samsung at 20 Mn, Oppo at 18.6 Mn and Realme at 16.7 Mn. The overall smartphone market stood at around 149.5 Mn units in FY25.

Lava remains a very small player in the smartphone market, selling around 8.7 lakh smartphones (0.87 Mn) in FY25, translating to less than 1% market share. This highlights the significant scale gap between Lava and established players, while also indicating large headroom for growth if Lava can successfully increase its presence in the ₹17,000–₹34,000 Entry Premium segment.

Lava – Feature Phone Market & CY2025 Performance

Lava remains a strong player in India’s feature-phone market, with around 25% market share, making it the third-largest feature-phone player globally. Despite the overall decline in feature-phone volumes, the segment remains an important revenue contributor for Lava.

In CY2025, Lava’s smartphone portfolio grew 63% YoY, while online sales volumes increased 74%. Its retail business grew 12% YoY, supported by an expanded distribution network of 1 lakh+ outlets across India.

Mobile Accessories & Hearables Market

India’s mobile accessories market grew from ₹23,300 Cr in FY19 to ₹50,300 Cr in FY24, at a 16.7% CAGR, and reached ₹53,600 Cr in FY25, growing 6.5% YoY. Chargers, cables and other accessories contributed ₹32,500 Cr (60.6%), while hearables contributed ₹21,100 Cr (39.4%) in FY25.

The market is expected to double to ₹1,06,500 Cr by FY30, with hearables projected to reach ₹51,400 Cr (48.2%), driven by rising adoption of TWS earbuds, ANC and multi-device connectivity. Other accessories are expected to reach ₹55,100 Cr (51.8%).

Lava – Accessories Opportunity

Lava participates in the accessories market through Probuds in the hearables segment and ProWatch in the smartwatch segment. The company also sells chargers and other mobile accessories, giving it an opportunity to diversify beyond smartphones and increase revenue per customer through cross-selling.

Feature Phone Operations – FY24 vs FY25

Lava generated ₹1,025 Cr revenue from feature phones in FY24, which declined to ₹902.53 Cr in FY25, while total sales volumes declined from 1.37 Cr units to 1.26 Cr units. The company’s ASP declined from ₹747 to ₹719 per unit, while capacity utilisation declined from 32.02% to 29.54%.

Lava maintains around 25% market share in India’s feature-phone market and sold approximately 1.25 Cr feature phones in FY25. However, the overall feature-phone market remains under pressure as consumers continue to shift toward smartphones.

At the same time, Lava is expanding its international feature-phone business. Export volumes increased from 1.69 lakh units in FY24 to 5.83 lakh units in FY25, while export revenue increased by around 53% YoY, with exports contributing approximately 3% of feature-phone revenue in FY25.

Smartphone Operations – FY24 vs FY25

Lava’s smartphone revenue declined from ₹1,162 Cr in FY24 to ₹586 Cr in FY25, while total smartphone sales fell from 16.76 lakh units to 8.91 lakh units, resulting in capacity utilisation declining from 7% to 4%. ASP also declined from ₹6,933 to ₹6,580 per unit.

The decline was impacted by higher raw-material costs, which put pressure on profitability and margins, while the smartphone segment declined by around 50% YoY. However, management indicated that the business recovered during CY2025, supported by new product launches and a greater focus on the Entry Premium segment, aimed at improving product mix and ASP.

Lava – Shift from Budget to Entry Premium

Lava has historically been concentrated in the Entry Level and Mass Budget segments, with models such as Yuva, O2, Blaze and Storm priced below ₹17,000. The company is now gradually moving towards the Entry Premium segment (₹17,000–₹34,000) through products such as Agni 5G, Agni 3 and Blaze Curve, while newer launches such as the Bold 2 5G and Virat V1 Pro 5G help strengthen its presence across the ₹10,000–₹20,000 range.

The company is also investing in product development, software optimisation, camera technology, device design and clean Android, supported by Vayu AI, an in-house AI platform. Lava has also expanded its STEM engineering, camera-lab, testing and component-level assembly capabilities to improve product quality and localisation.

Management Target

Lava’s management has stated that the company currently has around 2% market share and is targeting 10% market share in the sub-₹30,000 smartphone segment. Management has also indicated that the sub-₹30,000 segment accounts for around 80% of India’s smartphone market, making it the company’s key opportunity for gaining scale.

International Expansion

Lava is actively expanding its international presence to increase volumes and diversify beyond the Indian market. In 2021, the company acquired B Mobile (China Bird CentroAmerica S.A.) for approximately $50.54 million, giving it access to an established distribution network across Latin America. In 2026, Lava entered the UK market, marking its first major push into Europe.

The company is using these international markets to expand distribution, improve manufacturing scale and supply-chain economics, while reducing its dependence on the highly competitive Indian smartphone market. International expansion is therefore becoming an important part of Lava’s strategy to build scale and compete with larger global players.

Growth – New Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS)

The Government of India has introduced the ₹62,500 Cr Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) for FY27–FY31, with Target Segment 2 (TS2) specifically aimed at building Indian mobile-phone brands with global scale. Eligible companies need to have Indian ownership and control, their own brand/IP and product-design capabilities, with no minimum sales threshold for eligibility.

Under TS2, eligible Indian brands can receive a 5% incentive, with an additional 3% incentive for products designed and R&D conducted in India and up to 1.5% for sourcing eligible components domestically, creating a potential maximum incentive of 9.5%.

Lava is among the Indian players that could benefit from TS2, given its Indian ownership, in-house product design/R&D and manufacturing capabilities. The scheme could help Lava reduce its cost disadvantage, improve margins, increase localisation and invest further in product development, while supporting its shift from the budget segment towards Entry Premium smartphones and international expansion.
